Our city is located along the Ohio River in Massac County, Illinois.
As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 6,482 and the total area of the city
is only 5.1 square miles.
On Janurary 21, 1972 DC Comics declared Metropolis "Hometown Of Superman". On June
9, 1972 the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572 that declared Metropolis
the "Hometown of Superman", the comic book superhero who is based in the fictional
city of Metropolis.
We have a giant superman statue, located in front of our county courthouse and the
second week in June every year we host the Superman Celebration in Metropolis. Our
newspaper is called "The Metropolis Planet", of course. Metropolis is also home to
Harrah's Metropolis Hotel & Casino, located on the Ohio River in downtown Metropolis.
